Tigers and Nationals get rained out, Justin Verlander to start on Opening Day

Detroit Tigers' Justin Verlander reacts after the third out against the Oakland Athletics during the eighth inning of Game 5 in their MLB AL

LAKAELAND, FL (WTVB) - Yesterday's Grapefruit League game between the Tigers and the Washington Nationals was rained out, but there was still plenty of news coming out of Lakeland. Manager Brad Ausmus said Justin Verlander would be on the mound to start his seventh consecutive Opening Day for Detroit against the Kansas City Royals at Comerica Park on March 31st.  Ausmus said the decision was difficult because reigning Cy Young award winner Max Scherzer was the best pitcher in the league last year.

Meanwhile, shortstop Jose Iglesias confirmed that he has been diagnosed with stress fractures in both of his legs, a condition he has been dealing with for some time.  The infielder will visit another specialist today, but he believes he will be back on the field at some point this season.

Today, the Tigers have split squad games, hosting the Blue Jays in Lakeland and visiting the Mets in Port St. Lucie, Florida.
