Tigers fall to Nationals, Igelsias confirmed with stress fractures in both legs

VIERA, FL (WTVB) - The Tigers lost to the Washington Nationals 8-1 yesterday afternoon in Viera, Florida.  Starter Max Scherzer was roughed up, giving up five runs on seven hits while striking out eight in five and two third innings of work.  Victor Martinez plated the lone run for Detroit with an RBI single in the sixth inning.  This afternoon, Opening Day starter Justin Verlander gets the nod as the Tigers visit the Atlanta Braves.

Tigers officials have confirmed that shortstop Jose Iglesias has been diagnosed with stress fractures in both of his legs.  Iglesias will be re-evaluated in four months, but he could be out of the lineup until 2015.  The shortstop had issues with his shins last year, but tests did not reveal the fractures.  Team president and general manager Dave Dombrowski said he hasn't had any serious trade discussions and did not comment on speculation that the Tigers may be targeting players outside the team, including free agent shortstop Stephen Drew
