CLEARWATER, FL (WTVB) - Justin Verlander yesterday looked more than ready to begin the season Monday in Detroit as the Tigers shutout the Phillies 1-0 in Grapefruit League action at Clearwater, Florida. Verlander worked the first six-and-a-third innings, fanning seven and allowing just one hit and one walk. Phil Coke, Al Alburquerque and Blaine Hardy shut the door from there. Verlander finished spring training with 20 scoreless innings on the mound.
Ian Kinsler tripled in the first inning off Cliff Lee and scored on a Miguel Cabrera groundout for yesterday’s only run.
The Tigers host the Atlanta Braves this afternoon.
