ATLANTA (WTVB) - The first case of a rare and deadly respiratory disease from the Middle East has appeared in the Midwest and health officials are looking for anyone who may have come in contact with the male victim. They say it’s not easy to contract it from a infected patient, but it is possible. It’s called MERS and it kills about 1 in every 4 who catch it.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, the patient, a health care worker who just recently returned from Saudi Arabia, has been in the U.S. for a week-and-a-half and is now in isolation at Community Hospital in Munster, Indiana.
The CDC isn’t recommending that anyone change their travel plans at this time, but they are carefully watching for more cases.
