DETROIT, MI (WTVB) - The Tigers took down the Astros in a pitchers’ duel last night with Detroit beating Houston 2-0 in the opener of a 4-game series at Comerica Park. Max Scherzer prevailed over his mound opponent Jarred Cosart to lead the Tigers to their sixth straight win. Scherzer cruised through eight innings allowing 3 hits with nine strikeouts. Scherzer improve to 4-1 while Joe Nathan locked up his ninth save.
A seventh inning rbi single by Rajai Davis broke the scoreless tie and then in the eighth, Victor Martinez connected for a solo home run. Cosart took the loss despite only giving up an unearned run on 4-hits over seven innings.
The Tigers’ 18-9 record is the best in the American League and they lead the Central Division by 4-and-a-half games over the Twins. Tonight, left-hander Robbie Ray will make his major league debut for Detroit. The 22-year old Ray was a key part of the deal in the offseason that sent pitcher Doug Fister from the Tigers to the Nationals.
And last night at Wrigley Field, the White Sox got past the Cubs 3-1 in 12 innings.
