Two Branch County Sheriff's Department honored for bravery

Branch County Deputies Al Fleming and Greg Ware receive award from Sheriff John Pollack
Branch County Deputies Al Fleming and Greg Ware receive award from Sheriff John Pollack

COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Branch County sheriff’s deputies Al Fleming and Greg Ware have been chosen by the Michigan Sheriff’s Association to receive the MSA’s Distinguished Service Medal for 2013-2014.  Fleming and Ware were off duty in mid-March of this year when they rushed into a burning home hit by a gas explosion and rescued the man living there. The home owner, Edward Yudes, was in shock and was reluctant to leave the house at the corner of Old 27 and Bidwell Road north of Coldwater. He suffered second degree burns and cuts, was checked out by medics on scene but didn’t go to the hospital. It was clearly a close call for Fleming and Ware as the heat melted their coats and shoes.

Branch County Sheriff John Pollack yesterday announced the state awards for Fleming and Ware while also presenting them the Sheriff’s Department Award of Merit. The ceremony came during Tuesday’s County Board of Commissioners work session at the courthouse. Fleming and Ware will receive their Sheriff’s Association medals at the group’s Memorial Day banquet on Sunday June Sixth.
