COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - Wednesday was the second straight day the Branch County high school baseball and softball schedules were scrubbed because of rain and more postponements are likely today, but they were able to play girls soccer and boy’s golf yesterday.
In the soccer action, Coldwater got back over the .500 mark with a 3-1 win over Kalamazoo Central last night. The victory in the first round of the SMAC Silver Division tournament improved the Lady Cardinals to 8-7 overall and 3-5 in the conference. Becca Harmon scored first off a corner kick from Ali Germann with about 14 minutes to play in the first half. Kaitlyn Vella scored with 2:28 to play in the half, assisted by Harmon. Kalamazoo Central scored with 40 seconds to play, making it 2-1 at the half. The Lady Cardinals added to their margin with 31 minutes to play in the game on a long range shot by Harmon. It was Coldwater's third straight win. Shelby Bowers made 7 saves in goal, while Mina Wellet made 2. Coldwater will host Adrian in non-conference action Saturday.
The Coldwater JV team lost at Sturgis 1-0.
In boy’s golf, in the final SMAC East Jamboree of the season Coldwater came away with a 3rd place finish shooting a score of 173 at the Cedar Creek. Marshall won the event with a 156. In the final season standings, Marshal edged out Battle Creek Lakeview for 1st place in the division. Coldwater was 3rd overall followed by Harper Creek and Sturgis. Coldwater was led by Cam Ruge with a 41, Nathan Waterbury shot a 43, Scout Case had a 44, Stephan Boston carded a 45, Colllin Warner shot a 46, and Grant Yearling had a 56 to round out the scoring. Coldwater's Cam Ruge earned 2nd Team SMAC East Division honors finishing in 7th place overall with an 82.4 scoring average. Nolan Duda was named to the 2nd Team as well with his 8th place overall performance while teammate Nathan Waterbury was Honorable Mention SMAC East. The Cardinals will travel to the Island Hills Golf Course on Monday for the League Meet to determine overall standings in the SMAC Conference.
The Coldwater JV golf team was at Island Hills yesterday to play in a Jamboree hosted by Sturgis and came away with a 3rd place finish and they were led by Tanner Bowers with a 51. And at the White Pigeon Invitational at the Klinger Lake Country Club, Bronson finished tenth and Union City placed 11th.
On today’s high school sports schedule, in baseball and softball, it will be another makeup effort for Coldwater as the Cardinals hope to host Sturgis after the games were called off Tuesday and yesterday. Also, Bronson is at Niles Brandywine. In girls soccer, Quincy plays at home at 5:30 against Jonesville. And in girls tennis, the second season starts with the regionals with Coldwater in Division 3 at Stevensville-Lakeshore.
