QUINCY, MI (WTVB) - Yesterday in track & field, the MHSAA Regionals were held across the state, and in the Division 3 Quincy Regional, the Oriole boys placed 10th and the girls 5th, while Union City's boys were 5th and the girls 7th. Nine local student athletes qualified for the Division 3 State Finals, set for May 31 at Comstock Park, by finishing in the top 2 in their events. From Quincy, that includes Kayti Hawkins, who won the discus; Andrea Ferrin, 2nd in the 100 meters; Logan Miller, 2nd in the high jump; and Riley Horn, 2nd in the 3200 meters. State qualifiers from Union City include Aaron Watson, who was a double winner in the 100 and 200 meters; Evan Cross, 2nd in the discus; Katie Birch and Rachel Sutherland, who finished 1-2 in the 800 meters, and Heidi Gartley, 2nd in the high jump.
In baseball, Bronson swept a doubleheader against visiting White Pigeon, 12-0 and 9-2. Daniel McMichael was the winning pitcher in both games, while helping his own cause by going 1-for-2 in the opener with an RBI and 2-for-3 in the nightcap with 2 RBI. Ryan Hagen and Philip Mandoka each had 3 RBI while going 2-for-2 and 2-for 3 respectively in Game 1; Tyler Roussey was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the nightcap as the Vikings improve to 15-7 overall, 7-1 in the St. Joe Valley.
Concord scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning to edge visiting Quincy 7-6. Bryce McCavit took the loss on the hill despite giving up 2 earned runs with 3 strikeouts and 5 walks. Jake Jodway wend 3-for-3, while Jimmy Strock was 2-for-4 with a double as the Orioles fale to 16-11.
In golf, Coldwater's JV team traveled to Binder Park to play in the second to the last Jamboree of the season hosted by Harper Creek. Coldwater came away with a 2nd place finish to Battle Creek Lakeview. Coldwater shot a team score of 180 to Lakeview's 172. This finish puts Coldwater in a tie for 2nd place overall in the SMAC East with Marshall going into the last match of the season which will be hosted by Marshall on Monday. Leading the way for Coldwater was Nolan Duda who fired a round of 40 which was good enough to make him co-medalist for the event. Tanner Bowers shot a 45, Collin Warner had a 47, Nick Galliers and Grant Yearling both carded 48's and Keagan Dwyer rounded out Coldwater's scoring with a 49.
On today's schedule, in baseball, Coldwater hosts Bronson, Portage Northern, Carleton Airport, Ferndale, and Eastside in the annual Stout & Sons Invitational, while Union City is at the Climax-Scotts Invitational. In softball, it's the Cardinal Varsity/JV Invitational, with Bronson, Loy Norrix, and Gull Lake also competing. Union City's scheduled trip to New Buffalo has been called off due to poor field conditions. Finally, in girls soccer, Coldwater hosts Adrian.
