COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) - It’s only the second day of the new school year and already, there’s an early release for students this afternoon in the Coldwater School District, where it’s a new ERA with the Early Release Wednesday Activities, a plan to improve the performance of the pupils and the teachers.
The initial phase of the effort is in conjunction with the City of Coldwater Recreation Department. It’s all happening at Heritage Park and will include after school arts and outdoor sports. It’s an eight week program and runs from 2 to 5 pm for the middle school and 3-5 pm for elementary kids.
Students all year will begin class a few minutes earlier and will be released a few minutes later every day except Wednesdays. The earlier dismissal midweek will give teachers a chance to meet together to examine student achievement and make necessary adjustments to lessons. Legg Middle School students will be released Wednesday's at 1:26 pm. It's 1:35 pm at Coldwater High School, 2:10 pm at Lakeland Elementary and Lincoln Learning Center, 2:30 pm at Jefferson Elementary, and 2:40 pm at Max Larsen Elementary.
Coldwater school officials say the goal is to raise the odds that every student will master learning objectives. They add that with the new schedule in place, student contact time with their instructors will remain the same or may increase while the teachers use the time set aside to plan extra assistance for struggling students and create more learning opportunities for those who have mastered the basic materials.
