Quincy cruises to easy soccer win, former Coldwater volleyballers doing well at college level

QUINCY, MI (WTVB) - Tuesday night in boys high school soccer, Quincy cruised to a 9-1 victory at home over Calhoun Christian. The non-conference win improved the Orioles record this season to 3-0-1.  Jake Rider scored 3 of his team record tying 5 goals on the night in the first half which ended with Quincy leading 5-1. Rider then added the first two goals after the break and the Orioles went on to make it a mercy win later in the second half. The second of Evan Albright’s two goals closed out the scoring as Quincy outshot Calhoun Christian 31-12. Nick Haberl also had a pair of goals for the Orioles while Haberl, Rider, and Albright each had two assists. Tanner Parshall had 7 saves in goal for Quincy, which returns to action tomorrow night with an Independent Soccer League match at Hillsdale Academy.

Last night’s match at Quincy was the only varsity event for Branch County teams on Tuesday but it’s a busy schedule today and it includes more boys soccer with Coldwater’s home opener as the Cardinals host Battle Creek Lakeview. The j-v game starts at 5 pm with the varsity action set to begin tonight at 6:45 pm. In girls golf, Coldwater plays in an Interstate Eight jamboree hosted by Harper Creek at Binder Park. In volleyball, Union City has a tri-match for its home opener, hosting Colon and Climax-Scotts. In cross country, Coldwater, Quincy, and Bronson will be running at the Springport Invitational. And in boys tennis, it’s Bronson at Three Rivers. Today on the Coaches Corner, it’s Bronson football coach Dan Burzynski.

A number of student-athletes from Branch County are competing at the next level this fall including college volleyball for two members of the Coldwater High School Class of 2013. Bree Ann Spangler plays at Division One Indiana State while Lauren Outwater competes at Division Three Albion College. This past weekend, Spangler led Indiana State to a 4 game sweep as the Sycamores started their season at home by winning the Holiday Inn Classic. Spangler, who is a sophomore outside hitter, was named the tournament’s MVP.
