COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, in weekend baseball, Coldwater had a 2-and-1 record on Saturday at their annual Southern Michigan Bank & Trust Invitational. The host Cardinals opened up with a 4-2 victory over Kalamazoo Central. Brandon Lewis was the winning pitcher, tossing a 3-hitter over 6 innings with 4 strikeouts. Randall Linton finished up on the mound, striking out the side in the seventh. Brayton Rzepka and Jordan Butler had 2 hits apiece with an RBI for Butler. Lewis added an RBI double.
In game 2, Coldwater lost to Hamilton, Indiana 10-4. Rzepka suffered the defeat. Lewis, Rzepka, Linton, and Brendan Spangler had two hits apiece while Butler had 2 RBI’s with a double. The Cardinals wrapped up the day with a 12-1, five inning victory over Fremont, Indiana. Coldwater broke it open early with 8 runs in the first inning. Starting pitcher Sean Printke earned the win, giving up 3 hits and one run over two innings. Linton had 3 hits and an RBI while Michael Gillette and Austin Krzeminski each had a hit and 2 RBI’s.
The Cardinal’s record is now 4-and-1 and they return to action tomorrow at home against Comstock and we’ll have our opening baseball broadcast of the season Tuesday, joining the doubleheader in progress with our live coverage on the radio beginning around 5:30 p.m. following the Evening Journal. We’ll also have Coldwater’s Interstate Eight Conference opener on the radio Thursday when the Cardinals host Marshall at Lowe Field.
In junior varsity baseball on Saturday, Coldwater swept a doubleheader at Jackson High 5-2 and 7-3. Collin Torrey and Kameron Miller were the winning pitchers and Mitch Duda earned a pair of saves. In Game One, Cameron Barnes had 4 hits and 3 RBI’s. In the second game, Calab Letendre had a double and a triple.
In softball on Saturday, Bronson had a 2-and-1 record at the Comstock Invitational. The Lady Vikings dropped their opener 12-0 to Buchanan. Adyson Lasky took the loss. Bronson then beat Parchment 15-1. Skyler Sobeski went the distance with a 5-hitter over six innings with 9 strikeouts. Sobeski helped her own cause by hitting a grand slam. Kinslea Blouin had 2 doubles and 2 singles with 3 RBI’s and Kelsey Robinson had 3 hits with a double and an RBI. Bronson finished up with a 19-3 victory in 4 innings over Comstock. Sobeski pitched 3 innings for the win with a 3-hitter and 5 strikeouts. She also went 3-3 at the plate with 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s while Blouin had a home run, a triple, and double with 5 RBI’s. Bronson improved their record to 4-1.
On today’s high school schedule, in softball, Coldwater has a doubleheader at home against Hanover-Horton while in baseball and softball, Quincy hosts Sand Creek . In girls soccer, Coldwater plays at home against Jonesville. And in boys golf, Coldwater starts its season at the Adrian Invitational while Bronson has a BCS East Jamboree hosted by Centreville.
