QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports from over the weekend, in baseball, Quincy had a 2-1 record in a tournament at Michigan Center on Saturday. Quincy dropped its opening game 9-2 to Parma Western. Tyler Powell took the loss. Trent Burrell had 2 hits including a double while Chase Cook had a hit with 2 RBI’s. The Orioles then beat Vandercook Lake 8-3. Josh Clark earned the victory with a 5-hitter over 6-and-a-third innings with 5 strikeouts. Bryce McCavit had 3 hits with 3 RBI’s and 2 runs scored. Cook also had 3 hits with 3 runs scored. Quincy finished the day by beating Whitmore Lake 2-1 in five innings. Hunter Haylett went the distance to pick up the win and also had one of the Orioles 3 hits with a double and an RBI. Quincy’s record is now 11-6.
Also in baseball, Union City won the Climax-Scotts Invitational. The Chargers defeated Climax 9-5 in their opener. Seth Bruce had ten strikeouts and tossed an 8-hitter while Cody Link had a single and a double and 3 RBI’s. In the championship game, Union City beat Martin 11-0 in five innings. Darren Austin threw a 1-hitter over 4 innings for the win and he also had a double and 3 RBI’s. Kenyon Stuchell had 3 singles and an RBI as the Chargers improved their record to 6-and-7.
In softball, Union City went 2-and-1 in a tournament at Michigan Center. The Chargers started with a 10-9 win over Parma Western and Marissa Mead pitched a complete game for the victory. Skyler Herman had 3 doubles and 4 RBI’s while Riley Smith had 3 hits including a walk-off RBI double to win the game. Union City then beat Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard 12-9. Mead again was the winning pitcher while Herman hit for the cycle with a single, double, triple and home run and Smith had 3 hits with 2 doubles and 2 RBI’s. The Chargers closed out with a 5-1 loss to Michigan Center. Mead took the loss with a 5-hitter while Brenna Johnson had 3 hits and 4 stolen bases.
In JV softball, Coldwater won their invitational on Saturday. In game one, the Lady Cardinals scored an 18-2, four-inning victory over Sturgis with Emma Stanley the winning pitcher. Sierra Wolfcale had a triple and 2 singles with 6 RBI’s. In the championship game, Coldwater beat Olivet 15-0 in three innings. Drue Mullin picked up the win with a 1-hitter and 3 strikeouts. Cheyenne Akers had a double and a single and 2 RBI’s.
Today in high school sports, in girls soccer, Coldwater has an Interstate Eight Conference match at home against Pennfield beginning around 6:45 p.m. following the JV game, which starts at 5 p.m. Also in soccer, Quincy plays at home at 5:30 p.m. against Hillsdale. In baseball and softball, Union City hosts Colon. In Girls tennis, it’s Coldwater at Parma Western while Bronson is at Kalamazoo Hackett. And in Boys golf, Bronson has a BCS East Jamboree hosted by Mendon at the St. Joe Valley Golf Course.
