BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, from over the weekend, in wrestling on Saturday, Coldwater finished third, Bronson was fourth, and Union City 15th at the annual Bill Evans Memorial Tournament at Battle Creek Central. Winning the event was Battle Creek Lakeview.
Leading the way for the county teams with first place medals were Josh Powers of Coldwater at 125 pounds and Bronson’s Brett Burtrum at 189. Also placing with a top six finish from Coldwater were Nooh Aljabaly, runner up; Tyler Massey, Randall Linton and Zach Gipple, fourth; Jesse Miller and Zach Chehowski, fifth; and Shuaib Aljabaly, Colin Klein, and Austin Rutz, sixth; And from Bronson, Joey Losinski and Jukoada Sexton, second; Wesley Disbro and David Erwin, third; Mykal Kline and Chase Gibson, fourth; and Jacob Butters, sixth.
In gymnastics on Saturday, Coldwater finished fourth out of 5 teams competing at the St. John’s Invitational and their point total of 120.75 gave the Lady Cardinals their fourth team qualifying score of the season, earning them a berth in the MHSAA Regionals in March. Coldwater opened the competition on the uneven bars with Jenny Daoud finishing third with her mark of 7.75. Next on the beam, the Lady Cardinals stuck 8 of 12 routines and scored their second highest team total of the season. Five from Coldwater earned individual Regional qualifying scores including a 10th place tie from Darien Dyer and Jenny Daoud at 7.95. It was Dyer’s fourth personal qualifier, earning her the right to compete in the post season. On the floor exercise, Amanda Daoud earned the sole qualifying score with her 14th place finish at 7.95. Finally, on the vault, Coldwater needed to score at least 32.725 on their last event to capture the team regional qualifier and they managed to earn that with a little room to spare at 32.9, picking up 8 individual qualifying scores along the way. Jenny Daoud led the team with her 10th place finish at 8.4. In the All-Around competition, Jenny Daoud finished her competition in 8th place while Amanda Daoud took 14th place. Coldwater is scheduled to travel to Tecumseh tomorrow for a conference matchup and then Saturday it’s the Lady Cardinal Invitational and the 5th annual Stick It For a Cure competition.
On today’s high school schedule and likely to be cancelled because of the major snow storm, there are just two varsity events with Bronson boys basketball at home against Mendon and Coldwater bowling at Jackson Northwest. All Coldwater Legg Middle School games and practices have been cancelled for Monday.
