BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, Bronson is headed to the softball state tournament semifinals after beating Grand Rapids West Catholic 5-0 yesterday afternoon in a Division Three quarterfinal victory at Davenport College. Skyler Sobeski barely missed pitching a perfect game for the Lady Vikings, who will next play Montague at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Michigan State University. Sobeski retired the first 19 batters she faced before giving up a one out single in the seventh inning. She finished facing the minimum 21 batters with the game ending on a double play.
Leading the way on offense for Bronson were Allie Sikorski with a single and a double and 2 RBI’s while Kelsey Robinson had 2 singles and an RBI. Sobeski added a double and an RBI. Bronson improved its record to 36-7 while Montague is 23-12. The Lady Viking’s last trip to the semifinals was in 2009 while it’s Montague’s first ever berth in the semifinals. In the other bracket, it will be top-ranked Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central vs. Pinconning. The Division 3 title game is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Saturday at MSU.
In yesterday’s baseball quarterfinals, the highlights included Centreville’s Michael Kool tossing a no-hitter as the Bulldogs beat Climax Scotts 3-0 in a Division 4 game at Bailey Park in Battle Creek. And in Division 3, Jackson Lumen Christi defeated Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central 3-1 in eleven innings at Chelsea.
In boy’s golf, Coldwater’s State Finalist Cardinals held their annual banquet last night and conference awards were presented. Keagan Dwyer and Nick Galliers were named to the Interstate Eight All Academic Team. Dwyer, Galliers and Stephen Boston were honorable mention All-Conference while Nolan Duda, Cameron Ruge and Nathan Waterbury were selected to the I-8 All-Conference First Team for the 2015 golf season.
In girls soccer state tournament action, Gull Lake has advanced to its third straight appearance in the finals. The two-time defending Division Two Champion Blue Devils last night defeated DeWitt 1-0 in their semi-final match at Grand Rapids Christian. The State Championship game will see Gull Lake take on Fenton Friday afternoon at Michigan State.
