BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – Bronson’s bid for a state high school softball title continues this afternoon when the Lady Vikings take on the Montague Wildcats in the MHSAA Division Three semi-finals at Michigan State University. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. and we’ll have live coverage on the radio with our pre-game show beginning at 5:15 p.m.
Both teams were unraked heading into the state tournament. Bronson is riding a 17-game winning streak with a 36-7 record and is shooting for its first ever appearance in a Saturday final. The Lady Vikings last played in the semifinals in 2009. Montague has a 23-12 record with its deepest run yet in the post season. In the other semifinal bracket it’s top-ranked Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central against number-8 Pinconning. The Championship contest is tomorrow afternoon, again at 5:30p.m. at MSU.
Yesterday’s softball semifinal action included Mattawan losing in Division Two while in baseball, Portage Northern advanced in Division One while Vicksburg lost in Division Two. Today in baseball, Jackson Lumen Christi tries to stay alive in Division 3 while in Division 4 Centreville seeks to reach the final for the first time. In girls soccer, the state finals are today and tomorrow at Michigan State, including Gull Lake playing for a third straight Division Two title with the Blue Devils facing off this afternoon against Fenton.
The Coldwater High School girls varsity soccer team has been named Academic All State for the third straight year by the Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association. The 16 member squad finished with a combined 3.52 grade point average. Seniors Shelby Bowers, Allison Germann, Cadence Jones, Mackenzie McGuire, and Carlee Smoker were also named Individual Academic All State. 10 girls were named Interstate 8 Academic All Conference, including Bowers, Germann, Jones, McGuire, Smoker, Amanda Daoud, Megan Hoath, Madison Marsh, Maggie Pool, and Jasmine Wellet.
On the field, seniors Shelby Bowers and Carlee Smoker, along with sophomore Madison Marsh, were selected to the All District Team. Bowers and Marsh were also named to the Interstate 8 All Conference team, while Smoker and freshman Jasmine Wellet were Honorable Mention. The Lady Cardinals finished with an 11-8-2 record, the best in school history.
In summer league Mickey Mantle baseball, Coldwater swept a pair of four inning games yesterday at Hillsdale 13-1 and 9-1 to improve their record to 6-1. The winning pitchers were Collin Torrey and Alex Everett. In the opener, Austin Butler had 3 RBI’s with a double while in the second game, Porter Skidmore and Sean Printke each had two singles and an RBI.
