COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In state high school tournament volleyball district finals last night, Coldwater lost to Paw Paw in Class B at Paw Paw while in Class C at Homer, in a clash of county rivals, top-ranked Bronson beat Union City to advance to next week’s MHSAA Regional that Bronson will host beginning on Tuesday.
Coldwater’s season ending defeat at Paw Paw saw the Lady Cardinals fall to the host Redskins in 3 games, 16-25, 21-25, 14-25. Jasmine Wellet had a team-high 10 kills, Shelby Kahler led in digs with 8, Jamie Wellet led in assists 15 and Tyler Scheid had a team-high 3 blocks. Coldwater finished with a 19-19-5 record.
Bronson swept Union City in three games 25-14, 25-22,25-19. Team leaders in the victory were Jill Pyles with 11 kills, Kirin Cekander with 15 digs, and Alexa Ratkowski with 36 assists. The Lady Vikings will take a 52-10-3 record into their regional semifinal match against Bridgman at 6 p.m. Tuesday. In the second semifinal, it will be Schoolcraft vs. Centreville with the Regional Final next Thursday. Union City’s loss to Bronson last night closed out the Chargers season with a final record of 17-19-7.
The Coldwater Cardinals football team is hosting the Vicksburg Bulldogs in an MHSAA Division 3 District Final tonight with a 7 p.m. kickoff at Cardinal Field, where the gates open at 5:30 p.m. The pregame show on WTVB begins at 6:30 p.m. for the 10-and-0 Cardinals and the 8-2 Bulldogs.
The Cardinals are the only Branch County qualifier for the 2015 playoffs as they compete in the postseason for the third straight year. Tonight’s winner in Coldwater advances to next weekend’s Regional Final to meet the survivor of this evening’s game at St. Joseph between the host Bears and Edwardsburg.
Tomorrow, the Coldwater Boys Cross-Country team will be travelling to the MHSAA State Finals at Michigan International Speedway after the Division Two fifth-ranked Cardinals won their first Regional title since 2006 last Saturday at Buchanan. Coldwater will be competing in the afternoon while in the morning session, the Bronson Boys team will be running in the Division 3 finals following the Vikings second place showing in the Regionals. Quincy had 3 Individual qualifiers for the Finals in Division 3 with Brandon Gary, Gabby Porter and Katie Spalding set to make the trip to tomorrow to MIS.
