BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, in the volleyball state tournament last night, top ranked Bronson beat Bridgman 3-0 in the semifinals of the MHSAA Class C Regional at Bronson. The victory sets up a Regional final tomorrow at 6 p.m. between Bronson and Schoolcraft, which defeated Kalamazoo Christian 3-1 in last night’s second semi-final match. Schoolcraft and Kalamazoo Christian had been ranked ninth and tenth in the final coaches poll released November 2 on the day the tournament started. We’ll have live coverage on the radio of Thursday night’s Regional Final from Bronson.
The Lady Vikings last night swept past Bridgman 25-21, 25-8, 25-12. Kirin Cekander had a team-high 12 kills, Kiera Lasky led the way in digs with 15 and Alexa Ratkowski was tops in assists with 38. Bronson improved their record to 53-10-3. The winner of tomorrow night’s Regional Final advances to next Tuesday’s Class C quarterfinal at Vicksburg.
The Michigan High School Soccer Coaches Association has named Coldwater junior Mana Ahmed Division Two Second Team All State while senior Wageeh Saeed was named Honorable Mention for the second straight year. Those honors and others were announced at the team’s annual awards banquet last night, sponsored by the Coldwater Kiwanis Club. Ahmed and Saied also made the All-Region Team, as well as being All District. Others on the All District Team were Sean Delaney, Azam Ahmed, and Fadel Said.
Named to the Interstate 8 All Conference First Team were Mana Ahmed, Wageeh Saeed, Fadel Said, Sean Delaney and Azam Ahmed while Balal Nasser and Waheeb Ahmed were All Conference Honorable Mention. Named Interstate 8 Academic All-Conference were Delaney, Azam Ahmed, and Ben Fagen, while senior co-captains Delaney and Ahmed were also named Academic All State.
In awards voted on by the team, Tyler Hagaman was named Most Improved, Balel Nasser named Rookie of the Year, Wageeh Saied and Mana Ahmed shared the Best Offensive Player award, Sean Delaney and Azam Ahmed shared the Best Defensive Player award, Ali Naji was voted Hardest Worker, Delaney received The Cardinal Way Coach’s Award, and Fadel Said was named Most Valuable Player. Ahmed Saied was named MVP for the Junior Varsity team.The Coldwater varsity squad finished the season 16-4-2, ranked #10 in Division 2, and was co-champs of the Interstate 8 Conference while also winning the league Gold Division Tournament championship.
In football, the Division 3 District Champion Coldwater Cardinals have 8 first team and 4 honorable mentions on the Interstate Eight All-Conference team following Coldwater’s undefeated I-8 title season. Named to the first team were tight end Brandon Lewis, quarterback Luke Beckhusen, running back Spencer Burns, offensive linemen Colin Klein, Brayton Rzepka, and Dominick Clark, defensive lineman Connor Covert and linebacker Sam DeMeester. Honorable mention were offensive lineman Jordan Weaver, defensive linemen Jesse Miller and Brady Beckhusen and defensive back Austin Krzeminski.
