QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County girls high school basketball last night, Quincy lost a non-conference game at Mendon 48-22. Zoe Aseltine led the visiting Orioles in scoring with 8 points while Katie Spalding had 6 points and 10 rebounds. The defeat dropped Quincy’s record to 0-14.
Bronson fell in non-conference play at Olivet 56-45 with the Lady Vikings’ record slipping to 6-6.
Tekonsha lost at home to Colon 32-30 with 13 points for Jordynn Lloyd and 15 rebounds for Alexis Newbold.
Tonight in high school sports, in varsity basketball, it’s non-conference action for Coldwater as the Cardinals take on Portage Central with the boys game at Portage Central while the girls play in Coldwater. WTVB will have the boys contest on the radio with our pregame coverage starting at 7:00 p.m. The JV game which is set for a 5:45 p.m. tip-off, with the freshman play beginning at 4:15 p.m.
On the girls side, there’s no freshman game because of illness on the Portage Central team so the JV game in Coldwater is set to start at 5:30 p.m. followed by the varsity contest.
Elsewhere tonight, in boys only basketball, Quincy hosts Athens, Bronson is at home against Olivet and it’s Union City at Springport. Also, Tekonsha hosts Colon. In wrestling, Coldwater is at Sturgis for an Interstate Eight Quad meet. And in Boys Swimming & Diving, Coldwater has a home meet against Kalamazoo Loy Norrix at the Browne Aquatic Center. This afternoon, in bowling, Coldwater has home match with Pennfield at Midway Lanes.
Congratulations to Bronson High School seniors Alexa Ratkowski and Daniel McMichael who have been named recipients of a Michigan High School Athletic Association Student-Athlete Scholarship Award. Ratkowski and McMichael are among ten award winners from Class C MHSAA member schools who will each receive a $1,000 college scholarship in the annual program sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance. The awards will be presented at halftime ceremonies of the Class C Boys basketball Final game March 26, 2016 at the Breslin Center in East Lansing.
Ratkowski played 4 seasons of varsity volleyball and 3 of varsity basketball and helped her volleyball team win the Class C State Championship this fall. In the process, she set the MHSAA record for career assists and also sits among the all-time leaders for career aces. McMichael played 4 seasons of varsity football and basketball and will play his fourth of varsity baseball this spring. He earned all-conference recognition in baseball and football and served as captain for both teams.
In middle school girl basketball yesterday, Coldwater’s seventh grade teams split their games at Jackson Northwest with a loss for the A team and a win for the B squad, which beat Northwest 19-16. Joselyn Salto had 14 points. The A team went down to defeat 47-18 with 9 points for Alyssa Bach.
8th grade Cardinal White basketball team lost to Northwest 31-45. Scoring were Emma Moore with 9 points, Kaitlin Meyers with 8 points, Merna Yaldo with 6 points, McKenzy Cole with 4 points, Erica Parkinson and Madison Klotz with 2 points each.
Union City’s 8th grade team lost last night 37-4 at Quincy.
