COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports last night, in wrestling, Coldwater lost a conference meet at Harper Creek 49-23. Posting wins in the defeat with pins were Zach Miller, Jesse Miller and Sam DeMeester. Also, Faheem Abdullah won by technical fall. The Cardinals slip to 1-and-1 in the Interstate Eight with their next meet on Saturday at the Clinton Invitational.
The Bronson wrestling team stayed undefeated on the season with two wins in a quad meet, defeating River Valley 79-0 and Buchanan 60-10. The Vikings record is now 11-0.
Last night in gymnastics, Coldwater hosted Saline for the Cardinals home opener and the 5th annual Jillian Crist Memorial Scholarship Meet. Coldwater team members collected non-perishable food items to donate in her honor, as well as monetary donations for the scholarship fund. The Cardinals fell to the Hornets 134.7 to 121.8, but the Coldwater point total was good enough to earn their first Regional Qualifying Team score. They will need to pick up three more scores of 120.0 or better in order to make it into the MHSAA Regional tournament.
Coldwater had a solid start on the vault in their first event as Amanda Daoud led the way with an 8.30 for her second event qualifying score as did Shelby Kahler at 8.05. Madison Hedstrom earned her first qualifier of the season with 7.9. Next on the uneven bars, Daoud led the way once again with a personal best and her second qualifier with a 7.95, placing fourth against the tough Saline squad. On the balance beam, the Cardinals had four stuck routines and Brooke Neitzert placed 5th with a solid 8.00, in spite of falling early in the routine. Right on her heels was Darien Dyer’s mark of 7.925, a personal best. Both gymnasts, along with Daoud picked up Regional qualifying scores on the event. Coldwater finished the meet in fashion in the floor exercise, picking up six individual qualifying scores and their highest team total for the evening. Freshman Claire Sheppard led the Cardinals with her score of 8.475 for fifth place and her second qualifier and a personal best. Abby Swick earned a personal best and her first qualifying score at 8.125. Daoud also collected a second individual score. Shelby Kahler, Hedstrom and Neitzert were right on their heels with the trio earning their first regional qualifying scores for the season. In the all-around competition, Daoud placed third, Neitzert placed fourth and Swick’s fifth.
Wednesday in bowling, Coldwater had a match hosted by Pennfield with the visiting Cardinals winning on the boys side with a loss for the girls. The boys ended up tying the Panthers in regulation 15-15 and earned the victory by winning a third baker game as a tie-breaker. High scorers for Coldwater were Jaden Reichhart with a 191 and Alec Keplinger with a pair of 190’s. The Cardinals girls team lost to Pennfield 21-9 with a 184 for Kira Mobley.
In the bowling JV action, the Coldwater boys won their match 21-9 with a 177 for Vinni Barone. The JV girls also won 24-6 led by Tiffany Corwin with a 150. On Tuesday, CHS bowlers traveled to Marshall for their first Interstate 8 Match of the season with Coldwater winning all of their matches. The varsity teams will be traveling to Pennfield on Sunday for a Baker tournament.
On today’s high school sports schedule, in Boys basketball, it’s Quincy at home against Reading while Union City is at Concord. Also tonight, it’s Tekonsha at Climax-Scotts. In girls basketball, Bronson plays at Mendon. And in boys swimming & diving, it’s Coldwater at Charlotte.
