COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports last night, in wrestling, Coldwater picked up two wins in an Interstate Eight Quad meet at Pennfield. The Cardinals defeated the host Panthers 45-26 and beat Parma Western 55-21. Going 2-0 on the night for Coldwater were Harwan Alaatre, Faheem Abdullah, Daniel Pino, Jesse Miller, Sam DeMeester, Zach Gipple and Austin Rutz. The Cardinals improved to 3-1 in the conference.
Bronson stayed undefeated on the season with their two victories in a BCS quad meet at home last night. The Vikings shutout Parchment 81-0 and defeated Comstock 72-12. Going 2-0 for Bronson were Brendon Withington, Tommy Littlefield, Jacob Butters, Ruger Rainey, Isaac Robertson, Gavin Alger, Cole Houtz, David Erwin, Chase Gibson, Nathan Caudill, and Joey Losinski.
In the Big 8, Quincy lost 54-21 to Reading. Winners for Quincy were Kalieb Miller, Jared Brown, Trey Watson, and Joe Oberlitner.
In gymnastics last night, Coldwater lost on the road in a conference meet at Jackson Lumen Christi 132.925 to 121.075 but the Cardinals scored enough points in the defeat to earn their third team qualifier. The meet started on the uneven bars and Amanda Daoud picked up her fourth Regional qualifying score to lead the team with 6.975. Abby Swick was just shy of a qualifier turning in a mark of 6.55.
Next on the vault, 5 Cardinals earned qualifying scores. Daoud, BrookeNeitzert, and Maddy Hedstrom tied at 8.05, while Shelby Kahler and Darien Dyer tied at 8.0. Once again, it was the fourth and final score for Daoud, as well as Kahler, and both have earned their spot at the Regional.
For the third meet in a row Coldwater posted strong numbers on the floor exercise with five gymnasts earning a Regional score. Daoud led the team with her fourth place finish at 8.375. She will compete in the regionals on the event alongside freshman Claire Sheppard. Claire earned her fourth mark on the floor with her score of 8.1.
The meet came right down to the last score on beam as the Cardinals struggled with a handful of falls. Only three gymnasts turned in stuck routines, while four turned in qualifiers. Daoud placed third with a nearly flawless routine at 8.175 while Hedstrom, Neitzert and Sarah Odom earned qualifiers for their efforts. Coldwater hosts Mason next Wednesday.
Wednesday in bowling, Coldwater traveled to Jackson and swept to victory over Jackson Northwest at Airport Lanes. In the boys varsity action, both teams tied at the end of regulation, forcing a one baker game roll off with the Cardinals winning 214-189. High scorers included Alec Keplinger with a 279 and Shawn Johnson with a 268. Coldwater is now 3-0. In the 30-0 boys JV win, Tristan Furney rolled a 243.
The girls varsity won 24-6. High scorers included Cassidy Wolff with a 214 and Alysia Vanwormer with a 206. The JV girls won 30-0 with a 151 for Sabrina VanAuker. Coldwater has its first home match today at Midway Lanes.
Tonight in varsity high school sports, in boys basketball, it’s Quincy at Springport while Union City hosts Jonesville. Also, Tekonsha is at Battle Creek St. Philip. In girls hoops, Bronson is at Centreville. And in boys Swimming and Diving, Coldwater has a home meet against Battle Creek Central starting at 6 p.m. at the Browne Aquatic Center.
