EAST LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Former Michigan State head hockey coach Ron Mason has died at the age of 76. Mason had the second most wins in college hockey history with 924 and began his 36 year career behind the bench as the first head coach at Lake Superior State in 1966, leading the Lakers to the NAIA National Championship in 1972. He then moved on to become head coach at Bowling Green from 1973 to 1979 before taking over at MSU in the 1979-80 season.
Mason guided the Spartans to seven regular season CCHA championships, took 23 teams to the NCAA Tournament and captured the NCAA championship in 1986.
Following his career with MSU hockey, he served as the school’s Athletic Director from 2002-07.
