COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater Fire Captain Greg Sharp says the late Friday afternoon fire at the Real Alloy Recycling Plant on North Fillmore was possibly caused by product residue or the skimming of the product getting into some cardboard.
Coldwater Fire Chief Rich Sherman said on Friday the fire started in magnesium containers outside of the facility before it quickly spread to the building’s roof and exterior.
Flames also got into some nearby piles of aluminum scrap. Smoke from the fire could be seen miles away.
After getting dispatched at 4:46 p.m., it took Coldwater firefighters about two hours to get the fire under control.
Quincy firefighters stood by at the Coldwater station as an all call was issued for Coldwater fire crews.
Dry sand and flux had to be used to put the fire out since magnesium is extremely reactive to water. No injuries were reported.
