MATTAWAN, MI (WTVB) – Coldwater’s boys varsity soccer team suffered just its second loss of the season Saturday, falling at non-conference Mattawan 1-0. The lone goal of the game came on a Mattawan direct kick with nine minutes to play in the first half. Balal Nasser made eight saves in goal for Coldwater, including stopping one Mattawan penalty kick.
The loss dropped the Cardinals overall record to 16-2-1 on the season. They will host Jackson Northwest in the first round of the Interstate 8 Gold Division Tournament Tuesday.
The Coldwater JV soccer team fell at Mattawan 3-0 Saturday.

The Coldwater J.V. volleyball finished third at the Lakeview Invitational on Saturday. They went 2-1-2 on the day. Carlee Crabtree had 31 kills, eight blocks and 33 digs, Emilee Smoker had 48 assists, 29 kills and 28 digs, Anna Tappenden had 34 assists, 37 kills and 35 digs, Haley Wilson had 17 digs and Mya Tom had 17 digs and eight kills.

Coldwater finished 10th Saturday at the Portage Invitational in a crowded field of 49 teams. Shuaib Aljabaly finished second for the first time this season, although he did improve on his new school record. Zack Murphy was also a medal winner, taking 24th place, with 335 runners competing.In JV competition, Ayash Ahmed received the 21st place medal.
Bronson, Union City and Quincy squads competed at the Hudson Booster Invitational on Saturday in a meet that included schools from Ohio. Bronson was fifth in the Division Three boys race while Quincy was ninth and Union City was 16th. In a field that had 150 runners,
Quincy’s Nathan Nohr was the top finisher from Branch County as he was 17th. Colin Ransbottom of Bronson was 38th. His teammate Blake Bucklin was 42nd, Marcus Broom was 53rd and Hunter Trine was 68th. Chase Hurley of Union City finished 69th.
Quincy was fourth in the Division Three girls race which had 133 runners while Union City was 12th. Bronson did not have runners for a team score. Quincy’s Gabby Porter was fourth, Haley Bean was 35th and Madelyn Allman was 49th. Marika Endo of Union City was 56th while Meghan Vaughn was 92nd for Bronson.
