DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – Harwell Field is ready for baseball on the campus of Wayne State University. The ballpark honors late Tigers announcer Ernie Harwell and was officially opened yesterday with former Tigers greats Kirk Gibson and Allen Trammell on hand.
The facility includes several nods to iconic Major League ballparks, including a left-field wall modeled after Fenway Park’s Green Monster and a facade based on Ebbets Field, the home of the Brooklyn Dodgers where Harwell began his broadcasting career. The auxiliary scoreboard from Tiger Stadium is also in the outfield and the entrance lobby serves as a memorial to the announcer.
Harwell, who called games for Detroit for over 40 years, died at 92-years of age in 2010.
