COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater High School varsity bowling teams kicked off their season over the weekend participating in two tournaments. On Saturday, they traveled to Marshall to compete in a Scotch Doubles Tournament. Tiffanie Corwin and Alec Keplinger, Bryton Philson and Sabrina Vanauker, and Samantha Youse and Andrew Sheets made it to the top eight. Youse and Sheets went on to finish third.
On Sunday, the teams traveled to Pennfield to compete in The Battle of the Baker. Both squads bowled six two game baker sets across 12 lanes for qualification round. The top 8 teams based on total pinfall advanced to match play. After finishing third in the qualification round, the boys advanced to the next round of head to head action but they were defeated in the last match by three pins by Hartland who went on to win the tournament.
The varsity girls qualified fourth after 12 games and went on to the next level where they beat Hartland in match play. They then lost a close match to Jackson and defeated Brighton in two matches to finished third and receive individual medals.
Coldwater will begin their regular I-8 conference on Tuesday at Marshall and host Jackson Northwest on Wednesday at Midway Lanes for their first home meet. The home meet will be at 3:00 p.m.
—GIRLS GYMNASTICS—
Coldwater finished 11th in the 15 team Flip Flop Invitational hosted by Rockford on Saturday. The Cardinals had an eight point improvement over their last outing as they finished with 122.5 points.
Brooke Neitzert and Sarah Hughes both had regional qualifying scores in the balance beam. Claire Sheppard had a season best score in floor exercise with a 8.725 while Neitzert, Hughes and Kelani Phillip all had regional qualifying scores.
Coldwater totaled 33.7 points in the vault which was their best event of the day. Sheppard had a season best score in that event as well with a 8.55 while Neitzert, Hughes and Kelani Phillip all had regional qualifying scores. Hughes led the Cardinals on the uneven bars with a score of 7.325 as she and Phillip had regional qualifying scores.
Hughes had the top all around score with 31.4 points followed by Neitzert with 30.75.
