BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – On a 5-2 vote, the Bronson School Board approved a pre-Labor Day start on Monday night as allowed by a waiver issued by the Michigan Department of Education. The board action is pending approval as part of the collective bargaining agreement and I.S.D. support.
The Michigan Department of Education has granted a three year waiver starting with the 2017-2018 school year that would allow the Branch ISD along with the Coldwater, Bronson and Quincy school districts along with Pansophia Academy to start classes before Labor Day.
This would not affect students in the Union City School District since they belong to the Calhoun ISD.
School districts in Michigan can not start classes until the Tuesday after Labor Day unless they get a waiver.
BISD Superintendent Joe Lopez has indicated they would not pursue the early start unless it gets approval from all of the districts involved.
In other business, the board gave their approval for collective bargaining to start with the Bronson Education Association. The current contract expires at the end of June.
The board also decided to keep Deb Balowski as Board President while Janet Byler will remain as Board Vice President.
