DETROIT, MI (WTVB) – The Detroit Red Wings snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins last night at Little Caesars Arena. Luke Glendening scored twice and Niklas Kronwall, Frans Nielsen and Darren Helm each lit the lamp for Detroit.
The game marked a milestone for Kronwall, who scored the 400th point of his career. Jimmy Howard shook off an early goal by Sidney Crosby just 38 seconds into the first period and made 22 saves in the win.
Detroit skates against the Sabres in Buffalo tomorrow.
The Red Wings have recalled defenseman Joe Hicketts from AHL affiliate Grand Rapid Griffins. He had two assists, one hit and six blocks in nearly 18 minutes of ice time against Pittsburgh last night. Hicketts is in his second stint with Detroit after he made his NHL debut with the Wings in New Jersey in January.
Detroit head coach Jeff Blashill says he’s focused on the future and not on a report that he and general manager Ken Holland will return to the team next season. When asked about the issue, Blashill said he hasn’t seen the reports of his return and he’s focused on getting the team back to where the fan base wants to be.
Detroit will miss the playoffs for the second straight season, but the coach said he sees signs of progress in younger players including Dylan Larkin, Tyler Bertuzzi and Anthony Mantha. Blashill has one year left on his contract, while Holland’s contract is up at the end of this season.
