COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Branch County today is feeling winter snapping back with a vengeance, going from almost mild to potentially dangerous over the last 24 hours. It was the combination of rain and freezing rain that covered roads with slush on Sunday that has now frozen and left a sheet of ice under the light snow. Temperatures have dipped so low, so quickly into the single digits with double digit wind chills that salt basically no longer helps to melt that layer of ice, making streets and roads treacherous.
There were no school closings or delays in Branch County this morning as classes resumed following the 2 week holiday break. But just to the east in Hillsdale County, the Reading, Jonesville, and Pittsford, and Hillsdale school systems are closed because of icy roads.
The worst of this week’s winter blast temperature-wise could be Wednesday morning with forecast lows of at least 5 below with 15-20 mph winds. In the Coldwater school district, if the morning wind chill reaches 25-below for a period of time, classes are delayed or called off for the day.
