COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Projected bitterly cold wind chills Thursday morning has caused schools across Branch County and most of southern lower Michigan to cancel classes. The Coldwater, Bronson, Quincy, and Union City school districts will all be closed Thursday, as well as Pansophia Academy, St Charles Borromeo School, and St Mary’s Assumption Catholic School in Bronson.
In a statement on the Coldwater Schools website, Superintendent Dr Tina Kerr explained:
We have been receiving several inquiries about the very cold weather and the possible delay or closure of school. It is important that you know we are just as concerned about frigid temperatures as we are about icy and snowy roads.
There is no single rule or absolute temperature that will signal a mandated delay or closure. Generally, if the combination of air temperature and wind speed creates a wind chill of -20°, then we will give serious consideration to either a delay or closure. The safety of our students will always be our top priority and, if a delay or closure is necessary because of wind chill, that information will be relayed through our messaging system and local media.
The National Weather Service has extended its Wind Chill Advisory through Thursday evening, and has added a Winter Weather Advisory for Thursday night.
