QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – For the second straight night, weather wreaked havok on the high school sports scene. A number of high school basketball games scheduled for Friday were postponed due to the snow and cold. That included Coldwater’s girls and boys basketball doubleheader against Jackson Northwest. We earlier reported a tentative makeup date of February 2 for those games; those games will now be made up on Saturday, January 24th. No makeup date has been set for Bronson’s girls and boys basketball games at Mendon.
They got the basketball games in at Quincy last night, and it was a clean sweep for the Orioles against their cross-county rivals, the Union City Chargers. In the boys game, which Quincy won by a 68-58 score, Jake Rider led all scorers with 26 points, while Nick Haberl had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds as the Orioles improved to 4-0 overall, 2-0 in the Big 8. Elijah Way had 15 points and Jalen Boes 14 in the loss for Union City, just their first of the season; they drop to 5-1 overall, 1-1 in the Big 8.
Earlier, the Lady Orioles won their first game since the 2012-13 season, 36-23 against Union City. Cailyn Cook had 11 points to lead all scorers, while Payton Hines had 6 points and 12 rebounds as Quincy improves to 1-5 overall, 1-2 in the Big 8. Haley Harty led Union City with 7 points and 4 rebounds, while Makena Bartlett had 6 points and 9 boards as the Chargers fall to 2-6 overall, 0-3 in the Big 8.
On today’s schedule, weather permitting, in wrestling, Coldwater and Quincy compete at the Dave Elliot Invitational at Clinton, while in gymnastics, Coldwater travels to the Lowell Invitational. Tomorrow, the Coldwater bowling team travels to M-66 Bowl in Battle Creek for the annual Battle of the Baker.
