GALESBURG, MI (WTVB) – Friday’s 193-car pileup in Kalamazoo County on I-94 was the largest chain reaction collision involving a white out and icy pavement conditions ever recorded, according to Wikipedia. There have been seven larger mass collisions but they all occurred in fog.
The one thing you notice from the videos showing semis and cars slamming into the wrecks is there are no screeching brakes. The drivers are sliding on ice and there is nothing they can do to stop. Michigan State Police have brought in accident reconstructionists from all over the state, using a computer program, to figure out what happened in the pileup.
Lt. Dale Hinz confirms they have identified the drivers involved in the initial accidents that began it all. He says it’s too early if they will pursue prosecution. Hinz says the investigation team is asking the public to provide any pictures or video they may have, and is asking any drivers who have not been interviewed to contact them, so they can fill in the full picture.
