UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports last night, in boys basketball, Union City was a 59-39 winner at Jonesville. The Charger’s pulled away early with a 17-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. Jalen Boes had a game-high 17 points in the victory while Darren Austin added 13 points. Union City improved its record to 3-1 in the Big Eight and 7-1 overall. Jonesville won the JV game 38-32. Devon Watson had 15 points for Union City.
The Coldwater Boys junior varsity and freshman teams swept their games at home last night over Charlotte. The JV Cardinals beat the Orioles 50-23 with 12 points for Brady Beckhusen. Coldwater won the freshman game 59-34 with 14 points and 10 rebounds for Joe Severn and 11 points for Oliver Winter.
Last night in wrestling at Bronson, the Vikings split their matches with a 77-0 win over Colon and a 37-36 loss to Schoolcraft. In the victory over the Magi, there were 8 voids while posting pin wins were Nick Haviland, Brett Burtrum, and Nathan Caudill. Jukoada Sexton also won with a technical fall. Against Schoolcraft, earning pins for Bronson were Sexton, Caudill, and Burtrum along with Jacob Butters and Isaac Robertson. Other winners were Cole Houtz and Joey Losinski.
Thursday in bowling, the Coldwater boys and girls teams won their home matches over Jackson Lumen Christi at Midway Lanes. High scores for the boys were 191 for Buddy Bailey and 184 for Shawn Johnson while for the Girls, Alysia VanWormer rolled a 164 with a 150 for Paricia Neely. The boys team is now 4-0 while the girls record is 3-1. The Coldwater JV boys team was also a winner over Lumen Christi with a 203 for Gavin Duke.

Yesterday in middle school sports, in Girls basketball, Coldwater won 3 out of 4 games against Pennfield with the lone loss coming for the 7th grade “B” team. In the 8th grade contests in Coldwater, the “A” team beat Pennfield 55-45 with 22 points for Malorie Rzepka, 14 for Samantha Rodesiler and 10 for Tyler Scheid. Rzepka also had 18 rebounds with 14 boards for Scheid and 12 for Emilee Smoker. The Lady Cardinals took the “B” game 33-31 with 20 points for Anna Tappenden. In the 7th grade games at Pennfield, it was Coldwater winning the “A” team contest 38-20 with 16 points and 8 rebounds for Carlee Crabtree and 14 points for Olivia Foley. Pennfield won the “B” game 24-13 with 6 points for Merna Yaldo.
