KALAMAZOO, MI (WTVB) – As the window for getting vaccinated against influenza gets closer to closing for the season, the lack of those getting shots or sprays are making it tough for everybody. A mutated strain of the H3N2 flu was mismatched in this year’s flu vaccine, which has contributed to record numbers of parents getting vaccination waivers for their children. That has had ramifications beyond the classroom, according to Western Michigan University virologist and professor of biological sciences Karim Essani.
Essani says it’s still not too late to get a flu shot, for a second wave of flu is very possible before the season ends.
