COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports from over the weekend, in varsity boys and girls basketball Saturday night in makeup action at Coldwater High School that we had on the radio, the host Cardinals lost both games to Jackson Northwest. The Mounties won the boys contest 56-43. Coldwater was ahead 9-7 at the end of the first quarter but Northwest outscored the Cardinals 49-34 the rest of the way. Collin Warner had a team-high 12 points while our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater was Blaze Watson, who finished with 6 points. The defeat dropped the Cardinals record to 0-7 in the Interstate Eight and 1-9 overall. Coldwater’s next game is tomorrow night on the road against undefeated cross-county rival Quincy.
In Saturday’s girls matchup, Coldwater fell to Northwest 61-40. The Mounties pulled away in the third quarter, which started with the Mounties in the lead 24-18 and ended with Coldwater trailing 43-24. Kendall Galloway led the way in the loss with 8 points. The McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater was Haley Reincke, who ended up with 7 points. The Lady Cardinal’s record falls to 3-8 overall and 1-5 in conference play. Coldwater is off now until Friday when they host Marshall.
Also in makeup action on Saturday, in Boys hoops, Union City was a winner at home over Reading 74-39. Darrin Austin had 21 points while Jalen Boes added 14 points and 10 assists. Also, Lucas Vaccaro had 12 points and Seth Bruce had 13 boards and 8 assists to go along with his 8 points. The win improved the Chargers record to 4-1 in the Big Eight and 8-1 overall.
In wresting on Saturday, Coldwater had a 2-2 record at the Lakeshore Super Duals. The Cardinals beat Lakeshore 38-30 and then fell to Rockford 35-28 in the second round. Coldwater then bounced back to defeat East Lansing 65-7 before losing 73-0 to tournament champion Niles, the number-3 ranked team in the state in Division Two.
At Bronson’s annual Clark Walker Memorial Invitational, the host Vikings finished runner-up, losing to Lawton 42-25 in the finals. Going 5-0 on the day for Bronson were Joey Losinski, Mykal Kline and David Erwin while posting 4-1 records were Wesley Disbro and Jukoada Sexton with Sexton earning his 100th career win.
In gymnastics on Saturday, Coldwater competed at the Adrian Invitational with two squads in the 8 team field and the Lady Cardinals placed fifth and sixth. The day started with the balance beam and three from Coldwater earned individual qualifying scores led by Brooke Neitzert with a 7.8 that placed her 14th in the event. Next on the floor exercise Amanda Daoud was the sole qualifier at 7.925, good for 15th place. The vault was the highest scoring event for the Lady Cardinals with four individual qualifiers and Jenny Daoud led the way with a mark of 8.15. Coldwater finished the day on the uneven bars and Jenny Daoud tied for 9th place with her routine at 7.75. The Daoud sisters went back to back in the All-Around, finishing 9th and 10th on the day. Tonight, Coldwater returns to action with a gymnastics match at home against Parma Western.
The only other event on the schedule tonight is Boys basketball with Bronson at home against Centreville.
