COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Last spring, the school year in Coldwater didn’t come to an end until June 17th because of the need to make up days lost with winter weather cancellations. Summer vacation was supposed to have started at the end of school day on June 13th. There shouldn’t be a problem this year, barring any unusual outbreak of extreme winter weather in the next couple of months. That’s because this year the Coldwater School District has an expanded number of days to work with before the make-up class time would be required.
School Superintendent Dr. Tina Kerr told the Coldwater Board of Education at their meeting on Monday night that the district now has what she described as a pretty significant cushion to work with. Instead of having only six days leeway, Kerr said they now have 11 total days they can use for snow days. She proclaimed Coldwater schools as a district that has high academic standards with 185 days of instruction this year while the State Department of Education only requires 180.
According to Kerr, those additional five days can be called upon, if necessary, to use up before class time would have to be added onto the calendar. The 2014-2015 academic year in Coldwater is scheduled to end with a half day on June 10, 2015.
