COLDWATER (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, in Friday night varsity boys and girls basketball, the Coldwater and Quincy boys teams grabbed the spotlight with Coldwater breaking their double digit losing streak with their second win of the season while Quincy stayed undefeated with a victory on the road over an arch-rival.
The Coldwater boys and girls played at home against Interstate Eight Conference opponent Marshall and we had the doubleheader on the radio. In the nightcap, in the Boys action, the Cardinals snapped their 10-game losing streak by defeating the Redhawks 68-60. Collin Warner led Coldwater with 21 points including 13-for-13 from the free throw line while Luke Beckhusen added 11 points. Our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater was Austin Krzeminski for his non-stop hustle and desire on defense. He also scored six points. The Cardinals improved 1-7 in the conference and 2-10 overall while Marshall slipped to 6-4 and 3-4 in the Interstate Eight.
In the Girls game to open the twin-bill last night, Coldwater suffered a 47-40 setback against Marshall. After losing to the Redhawks by 47 last month, the Lady Cardinals trailed by only two with 2:11 left in the game. Michaela Gillette and Payton Watson had 11 points apiece in the defeat and Gillette was Player of the Game for Coldwater. The loss dropped their conference record to 1-7 and their overall mark to 4-9. Marshall remains unbeaten in the I-8 at 7-0 and they are 11-1 overall.
Turning to the Big 8, in boys and girls hoops, it was Quincy at Reading and the Quincy boys improved to 10-0 as they raced past the Rangers 65-36. Jake Rider and Jake Jodway had 18 points apiece in the win with 10 for Nick Haberl. The Orioles league record is now 6-0. In the Girls game, Reading beat Quincy 54-31. Katie Spalding had 10 points and 7 rebounds with the defeat dropping their record to 1-12 and 1-7 in the conference.
Also in Girls basketball, Bronson was a winner on the road over Cassopolis 51-48 with 14 points for Skyler Sobeski and 10 points apiece for Payton Robinson and Kinslea Blouin. The Lady Vikings stay unbeaten in the BCS at 4-0 with their overall record at 10-2.
And back to Boys play on Friday night, at Union City, the Chargers doubled up Springport 62-31 with 14 points apiece for Darren Austin and Elijah Way. Union City moved to 10-1 overall and 5-1 in the Big Eight.
And Tekonsha travelled to Camden-Frontier with a 57-28 victory for the visiting Indians. Connor Jenkins had a career-high 23 points in the win with 15 points for Chyene Wiescholek. Tekonsha improved their record to 4-7.
On today’s high school sports schedule, in wrestling, Coldwater and Bronson are at the Battle Creek Central Bill Evans Invitational while Quincy is at the Niles-Brandywine Invitational. In gymnastics, Coldwater is at the St. John’s Invitational. And in bowling, Coldwater competes in the Interstate Eight Conference singles tournament at the M-66 Bowl.
