LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The Michigan State Senate has approved their first legislation of the new session and Branch County Clerk Terry Kubasiak and Sheriff John Pollack won’t be happy about it. The package of bills is practically identical to the legislation passed in the December 2014 lame duck session to eliminate pistol licensing boards. The measures would make county clerks and the Michigan State Police responsible for the job the gun boards now handle.
The original legislation was subseqently vetoed by the Governor. The only change fixes the objection that Governor Snyder had to the bill, that it might allow people who had personal protection orders out against them, to get guns. It now heads to the house where passage is again expected.
Advocates say it will streamline the process of getting a concealed weapons permit, and opponents say that’s exactly why they dislike it. Kubasiak and Pollack say the current system works just fine so why fix what isn’t broken.
