UNDATED (WTVB) – In Friday night high school basketball, Cardinal Week wrapped up at Coldwater High School with a split of the varsity girls and boys basketball doubleheader against Interstate 8 foe Parma Western, games we brought to you on the radio. In the boys contest, Western used a 12-5 third quarter to pull ahead for good; they held off several Coldwater comeback attempts to pick up a 60-52 win. The Panthers out-rebounded the Cardinals 44-26, with a huge 19-7 edge on the offensive glass. Nate Waterbury led Coldwater with 13 points and 5 rebounds, while our McDonald’s Player of the Game, Luke Beckhusen, had 10 points and a team-high 6 boards. The Cardinals fell to 2-11 overall, 1-8 in the Interstate 8.
In the opener of the twinbill, the Lady Cardinals picked up their second straight win, holding off still-winless Western 47-36. Carlee Smoker led all scorers with 18 points and 5 rebounds, while Michaela Gillette had 12 points and 6 boards; they were named McDonald’s Co-Players of the Game. Kenzie McGuire had a team-high 7 rebounds as Coldwater improved to 5-10 overall, 2-7 in the Interstate 8.
Quincy earned a split of their doubleheader at Springport. The Oriole boys remain unbeaten on the season with their dominating 76-39 win against the Spartans, led by Jake Jodway’s career-high 28 points and 6 rebounds. Jake Rider added 24 points and 6 boards as Quincy improved to 12-0, 8-0 in the Big 8.
The Lady Orioles fell to Springport 38-25 to drop to 1-14 overall, 1-8 in the Big 8. Katie Spalding had 8 points and 14 rebounds to lead Quincy, while Cailyn Hines also scored 8.
In boys basketball, Union City picked up a 61-45 win at Reading to improve to 11-2 overall, 6-2 in the Big 8. Darren Austin led the Chargers with 13 points and 9 rebounds, while Seth Bruce had 11 points and 8 boards, and Jalen Boes and Colin Kreger had 10 points apiece.
Tekonsha dropped a 59-32 decision at Bellevue. Conner Jenkins led the Indians with 15 points.
In girls basketball, Bronson outscored White Pigeon 10-0 in the final quarter to gain a 43-30 win against the host Chiefs. Kinslea Blouin had a game-high 17 points, while Skyler Sobeski added 9 as the Vikings improved to 12-2 overall, 6-0 in the BCS East.
Today’s high school sports schedule is highlighted by conference wrestling tournaments and the 5th Annual Lady Cardinal “Stick It For A Cure” Invitational at Coldwater High School, with the proceeds from the meet and the silent auction going to the CHC Cancer Center. On the mats, Coldwater competes in the inaugural Interstate 8 meet at Parma Western, Bronson travels to Niles Brandywine for the BCS meet, and Quincy hosts the Big 8 meet, with Union City among the teams in action. Finally, in competitive cheer, Bronson hosts its invitational event, with Union City among the participating squads.
