COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The public this evening will get its first look in Coldwater at the Dr. Robert W. Browne Aquatic Center. The community open house at the facility on Western Avenue north of the Legg Middle School runs from 6 pm-7:30 p.m. The pool complex opens for daily public swimming on Monday, March 2.
The facility includes an Olympic competition pool along with a smaller, warm water exercise pool. Coldwater high school and middle school students have been using the center for swimming lessons as well as for life guard classes since earlier this month. The project was made possible by a nearly $15 million gift from Dr. Browne, a Coldwater native, and the donation from the member of the Coldwater High School Class of 42’ also funded a major expansion of the city’s Heritage Park Recreation Center.
The City of Coldwater owns the pool facility and has a 15-year lease with the Coldwater School District, which will operate and manage the swimming programs with a $50,000 yearly contribution from the City. Residents of Coldwater receive a 50% discount on pool use fees, which run $350 a year for a pass for adults with available discounts for seniors and for those under 19-years old. There are also family passes.
Construction on the Aquatic Center started in December of 2013.
