UNDATED (WTVB) – In high school bowling, the MHSAA Division 2 Finals got underway yesterday at Century Lanes in Waterford with the Team Finals, and the Coldwater boys were eliminated in the quarterfinal round by Flint Kearsley 1354-1325. The scores are based on the total pinfall from 2 Baker games and 1 regular game among the team members. The Cardinals advanced to the Match Play Finals by finishing 8th in the morning Qualifying Block; Coldwater’s girls, meanwhile, finished 13th in the Qualifying Block and didn’t advance. The Singles Finals are today, again at Century Lanes. Competing for the Cardinals today: Tyler Newman, Buddy Bailey, Patricia Neely, and Cassidy Wolff.
Two Bronson wrestlers are still alive as the MHSAA Individual Finals wrap up today at The Palace of Auburn Hills. Kahle Sheenks was 1-1 yesterday, picking up his first loss of the tournament in the championship semifinals, while Brett Burtrum was 2-0 after losing in Thursday’s first round. Both wrestlers will work their way through the consolation rounds. Wesley Disbro, Jukoada Sexton, and Nathan Caudill were eliminated in their weight classes yesterday, as were Coldwater’s Jesse Miller and Zach Chehowski.
In yesterday’s MHSAA Girls Basketball District Finals, Vicksburg, the team that eliminated Coldwater Monday night, fell to Sturgis 50-19 in the championship game of the Class B Vicksburg District. (The Cardinals defeated Sturgis during the regular season.) And in the Class C Reading District championship game, Hillsdale, who eliminated Quincy and Union City earlier in the week, lost to Homer 59-32. Marshall and Jackson Northwest form the Interstate 8 both won their respective Class B District finals, while Battle Creek Lakeview, coached by Union City native Don Bussler, won its first-ever Class A District Final.
In boys basketball, Tekonsha fell to Waldron 54-47 in a makeup game to close their regular season at 5-15. Connor Jenkins had a team-high 21 points for the Indians.
In addition to the Bowling Singles Finals and the final day of the Individual Wrestling FInals, today’s high school sports schedule includes Coldwater competing in the MHSAA Gymnastics Regional at Grand Rapids Kenowa Hills. And the 42nd Annual Al Clyne Exchange Club Freshman Boys Basketball Tournament wraps up with four games at Legg Middle School. Coldwater takes on Jackson in the 3rd place game beginning at 5:30, while in the championship game at 7:15, it’s Lumen Christi vs. Marshall.
