COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The second season in boys high school basketball tips off tonight with first round games in the MHSAA State Tournament with 3 county teams opening play in the Hillsdale Class C District. Coldwater is hosting a Class B District but the Cardinal’s March Magic journey doesn’t begin until Wednesday night and their semifinal matchup with Sturgis.
Tonight’s games start at 6 pm and include Quincy at home against Reading, Union City at Homer and Bronson at Jonesville. Also tonight, at the Battle Creek St. Philip Class D District, it’s Tekonsha vs. Marshall Academy.
The second week of the girls basketball State Tournament gets underway tomorrow night with the Regional semifinals. No Branch County teams were able to advance beyond the districts.
The 42nd Annual Al Clyne Coldwater Noon Exchange Club Freshman Boys Basketball Tournament concluded Saturday at Legg Middle School and the host Coldwater Cardinals ended up in fourth place after losing 61-36 to Jackson High with 9 points for Joe Severn. The Coldwater freshman team finished their season with a 7-13 record. Marshall won the championship game with a 61-56 victory over Jackson Lumen Christi.
Two Bronson wrestlers made Division 4 All-State and returned home with medals from Saturday’s Individual Finals at the Palace of Auburn Hillsdale. Kahle Scheenks finished fourth at 135 pounds and Brett Burtrum placed fifth at 171 pounds. 3 of their teammates and two qualifiers from Coldwater were eliminated in their weight classes on Friday.
In gymnastics, Coldwater competed Saturday in the MHSAA Regionals at Kenowa Hills and finished sixth out of 11 teams with their second highest score of the season at 124.75. Only the top 3 teams and 8 individuals in each division advance and none of the Coldwater gymnasts were able to qualify for the Division Two finals. Jenny Daoud had hoped to move on, but suffered an ankle sprain in practice last week which prevented her from competing in the all-around. Amanda Daoud picked up a season high total score of 31.9 points to finish 28th overall for the Regional meet. Several Coldwater gymnasts posted or tied personal best scores as they peaked at the right moment to end their 2015 season. Amanda Daoud had the best showing on the day for the Lady Cardinals, making the top 20 on the balance beam with her 18th place finishing routine mark of 8.475.
In high school bowling Saturday, in the Division 2 Individual Finals at Century Lanes in Waterford, two boys and two girls from Coldwater competed with Patricia Neely making it to the state quarterfinals before being eliminated while Cassidy Wolff placed 24th in the qualifying round. For the boys in qualifying, Buddy Bailey took 20th place while Tyler Newman finished 56th.
The Winter high school sports season in Michigan doesn’t end until the Boys Basketball State Finals on March 28th but the Spring Sports lineup begins to take shape today with the first allowed practice sessions including for baseball, softball, girls soccer, boys golf, girls tennis, and Track and Field.
