For mathematicians and all those with a thing for circles today is PI day.
PI is the number you use…3.1415…to figure out a circle’s circumference from knowing its diameter. It’s also today’s date, something that only happens once a century. Cindy Lawrence runs the National Museum of Math and says when you do that division, you take the circumference and divide it by the diameter, you always get this exact same number that is called Pi. It seems rather magical and special. However, according to Lawrence, it’s really just an identifying feature of the circle. She says they will be celebrating Pi Day by creating a big circle of people and eating pie. Ironically scholars say the names of the math icon and the dessert have completely different and unrelated roots, even though both are round.
