LANSING, MI (WTVB) – The latest battleground in the homosexual rights war in Michigan is in the Legislature where yesterday Branch County’s representative in the State House helped in the passage of a package of bills that allows faith based adoption agencies to refuse child placements that go against their religious beliefs.
Democrats say that it’s a license to discriminate against same-sex couples, while Republicans such Eric Leutheuser of Hillsdale counter that it keeps religious-based agencies from having to close their doors. Leutheuser says, in some ways, it’s an issue that is very, very simple. It’s about what’s best for the children, it’s what’s working well now and serving Michigan well and the legislation aims to see that continue into the future.
As the Senate gets its hands on this legislation, House Families, Children and Seniors Committee Chairman Tom Hooker told MIRS News that this applies to about 14 to 17 faith-based agencies among the 105 currently operating in Michigan.
