COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In girls high school basketball, Coldwater senior Michaela Gillette was selected by her teammates as Most Valuable Player for this season with the honor announced at Sunday’s annual awards banquet. Gillette was also selected Best Defensive player. Other awards voted on by the team were Most Sportsmanlike: senior Shelby Bowers; Leadership Award: senior Carlee Smoker; and Most Improved Player: junior Katie Stanton. Varsity head coach Ken Smoker’s Coaches Award was presented to junior Megan Hoath.
Gillette, Smoker, and Kendall Galloway were Interstate Eight All-Conference Honorable Mention, while earning Academic All-Conference honors were Bowers, Smoker, Hoath, Stacy Guzy, and Kenzie McGuire.
The girls basketball season ended Saturday at the Breslin Center with the MHSAA State Finals Championship games. In Class D, Hillsdale County’s Pittsford Wildcats were defeated in overtime by St. Ignace LaSalle for Pittsford’s only loss of the season. The other title winners: Bloomfield Hills Marian in Class A; Detroit Country Day in Class B; and Calumet in Class C. The boys basketball season wraps up this week, starting with tomorrow night’s March Magic Quarterfinals.
The Coldwater boys and girls varsity track season opener was Friday at the annual Huron Relays at Eastern Michigan University’s Bowen Fieldhouse. The competition had a large and small school division with Coldwater in the small school division and the Cardinals’ Boys team tied for fourth place out of 21 schools. Logan Targgart took first place in the shot put while Connor Covert finished fifth. Coldwater took second place in the 800 meter relay and seventh in the distance medley and 400 meter relays. Also earning points for the Cardinals were Blaze Watson, sixth in the pole vault, and Jayden Coney, 8th in the long jump. On the Girls side, Coldwater’s Hannah Parrish took fourth place in the shot put.
The spring season high school sports schedule for Branch County teams this week includes several opening games, weather permitting, beginning tomorrow with softball for Quincy at home against Addison and Quincy girls soccer on the road against Olivet. Wednesday, Quincy and Union City begin their track seasons at the Hillsdale College Invitational. And the Coldwater girls Varsity and JV Soccer teams open play Thursday at Hastings.
