COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – More than 2 dozen food service establishments in Branch County have made the grade and are worthy of certificates of excellence from the Health Department in Coldwater. The Branch-Hillsdale-St. Joseph Community Health Agency’s Board of Health released its annual list this week for those that were able to meet stringent criteria during the year.
Rebecca Burns, Environment Health Director, said certain violations could result in foodborne illnesses. The food establishments have to comply with criteria including employing a certified food safety manager and be compliant with Michigan’s smoke-free law. The food service facility also must be at a fixed location and operate at least 12 days a month with food preparation at the facility. Food service inspections are normally performed twice a year.
The Environmental Health Division inspects all food service establishments in the tri-county area to assure proper food handling and sanitation for food served to the public. Annually, agency sanitarians conduct over 900 food establishment inspections and issue more than 250 temporary food permits to food vendors attending local festivals and community events.
