COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, a very busy schedule for Monday and the weather was a helper yesterday for a change with some sunshine and above normal temperatures for several baseball and softball season openers. In baseball, Coldwater started its schedule at home by sweeping a doubleheader from county rival Union City 10-0 and 15-0. In the 5-inning first game, Jordan Butler started for the host Cardinals with 8 strikeouts and no hits over 3 innings. Nick Shaw tossed the final two innings giving up 1 hit with 5 strikeouts and got the victory. Michael Gillette and Brendan Spangler had 2 hits apiece with 3 rbi’s for Gillette and two for Spangler. For Union City, Colin Kreger took the loss and he had the Chargers lone hit.
In the 3-inning nightcap, Coldwater broke it open with 11 runs in the second inning. Brandon Lewis was the starter with two innings on the mound and Sean Printke finished up as they combined to no-hit Union City with 5 strikeouts for Lewis and 3 for Printke. On offense, Jordan Butler had a 3-run homer while Brandon Lewis had 2 hits including a triple and 3 rbi’s. Michael Gillette added 2 hits with an rbi and Brendan Spangler had a triple with 3 rbi’s. The Cardinals leave Thursday for the team’s annual spring training trip to Florida.
In the JV games played at Union City, Coldwater swept their doubleheader 16-0 and 19-0.
Also in baseball, Bronson opened their season by dropping a doubleheader at home to Homer 10-0 and 4-2. The losing pitchers were Daniel McMichael and Tyler Roussey. In the nightcap, Coty Bennett had a double with a run scored for the Vikings.
In softball yesterday, Coldwater took a pair at home over Union City 12-1 and 12-0. Stacy Guzy and Darlene Horn were the winning pitchers. In the 4-inning opener, Guzy had a 5-hitter and 5 strikeouts. Kendall Galloway had a double and 2 singles while Morgan Howard added a double and a single and Jamie Wellet and Payton Watson both had 2 singles apiece. Skyler Herman had 2 doubles and an rbi for Union City.
In the 3 inning nightcap, Horn threw a 1-hitter with 4 strikeouts and no walks. Galloway had a triple and a single, Alyson McKinley had a double and a single, and Watson and Kati Stanton both had 2 singles. Union City’s lone hit came from Skyler Herman and Hailey Rivard took the loss on the mound in both games.
In the JV games at Union City, it was a sweep for Coldwater 18-1 and 26-6. The winning pitchers were Drue Mullin and Sierra Wolfcale. In Game One, Carly Duke had a single and a double and 3 rbi’s while in Game Two, Wolfcale had 3 singles and 2 rbi’s and Izzy Foley had 2 triples and 3 rbi’s.
Bronson’s softball season opened with a doubleheader sweep at home over Homer 5-3 and 11-1. Skler Sobeski was the winning pitcher in both games, going the full 7 innings in the opener while tossing 2 innings of no hit ball in the nightcap. Adyson Lasky finished up with 3 innings of relief. On offense, in game one, Sobeski had a home run and 2 singles. Payton Robinson added a home run and a single with 2 rbi’s.
In the second game, Hannah Hoover had a home run and a single with two rbi’s while Lasky had a single and a double with an rbi and Allie Sikorski had 2 rbi’s with a double and a single.
Last night in Girls soccer, Coldwater was a 4-0 winner at Sturgis. Megan Hoath had 2 goals with one goal each for Allison Germann and Mackenzie McGuire while the assists went to Madison Marsh, Jasmine Wellet, and Breanna Eddy. Coldwater took a 1-0 lead into the second half and then outshot the host Trojans 7-1 after the break. Shelby Bowers had 5 saves in goal as the Cardinals outshot Sturgis on the night 15-5. Coldwater improved their record to 2-1 and tomorrow night, the Cardinals host Quincy in the annual “Battle of the Birds with a traveling trophy on the line.
In last night’s JV match, Sturgis beat Coldwater 2-1. Carlie Wilson had the goal with an assist from Mara Bockheim.
Monday in track, Bronson’s boys and girls teams lost at home to Athens. The visiting Indians won the Boys meet 75-58. Double winners for Bronson were Eric Toledo in the shot put and discus and Marcus Broom in the16-hundred and 32-hundred meter runs. Athens took the Girls meet 74-53. Joselyn Cabrera won the shot put and discus for Bronson.
On today’s high school schedule, in baseball, it’s Quincy at Lenawee Christian. In track, Coldwater has a tri-meet at home hosting, Marshall and Charlotte. In girls soccer, Quincy has a match at Lenawee Christian and in Girls tennis, it’s Coldwater at Adrian.
