COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports yesterday, in softball, it was a non-conference doubleheader sweep for Coldwater at Comstock 5-2 and 17-2. In the opener, Stacy Guzy picked up the victory going the distance with a 7-inning five-hitter along with 5 strikeouts and one walk. Guzy helped her own cause with 3 singles. Kendall Galloway and Payton Watson each added a double and a single while Morgan Howard and Michaela Gillette had 2 singles apiece.
In the four-inning nightcap, Darlene Horn tossed a 4-hitter with no walks. On offense, Howard had six rbi’s with two home runs, including a grand slam along with a single. Guzy, Gillette, Galloway, Watson, and Alyson McKinley each had two singles as Coldwater improved their early season record to 4-0.
In baseball yesterday, Quincy’s Tyler Powell threw a 5-inning no-hitter in the Orioles’ 12-0 victory at Adrian Lenawee Christian. Powell had 3 strikeouts and one walk in his gem. Quincy put the game away with 5 runs in the top of the fifth. Jake Jodway, Evan Albright, and Trent Burrell had 2 hits apiece while Jake Rider had a double and 3 rbi’s as the Orioles improved to 2-0.
Tuesday night in girls soccer, Quincy played to a 2-2 tie at Lenawee Christian. The match was tied 1-1 at the half with the Orioles scoring on an unassisted goal by Liz Counterman. Quincy took a 2-1 lead after the break when Laura Estalote scored on a cross from Mackenzie Moore but the host Cougars later tied the game on a long free kick. On the night, Quincy outshot Lenawee Christian 8-5. Haley Askew had 4 saves in goal. The Orioles will take a 1-0-and-1 record to Coldwater tonight as they take on the Cardinals in the annual “Battle of the Birds” with a travelling trophy on the line for the match that starts at 6 p.m.
Elsewhere on today’s schedule, in baseball, it’s Quincy at Addison while in baseball and softball, Union City is at Colon. In Track, Quincy is at Sand Creek, Bronson hosts Cassopolis, and Union City is at home against Battle Creek St. Philip. And in Girls tennis, Bronson is at Battle Creek St. Philip.
