COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Community Health Center of Branch County (CHC) is one of three hospitals in Michigan to offer a new, less invasive treatment for an enlarged prostate. CHC Urologist Kevin Brewton, MD is now offering a revolutionary treatment option, the Urolift® System. Cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in 2013, the UroLift System is designed to relieve symptoms caused by an enlarged prostate or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). The permanent implant treats symptoms due to urinary flow obstruction in men ages 50 or older.
“The Urolift System is another viable option to drug Therapy or more intensive surgery in treating enlarged prostate,” said Dr. Brewton. “The minimally invasive implant procedure can be done on an outpatient basis. The patient goes home the same day without a catheter.”
Medication is often the first line of therapy but relief can be limited with substantial side effects. The other common alternative to medication is tissue removing surgery. While current surgical options, such as the ‘gold standard’ surgery, Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP), can be very effective in relieving symptoms, they can also leave patient with permanent side effects. The Urolift System requires no cutting, heating, or surgery removal. It lifts the enlarged prostate tissue out of the way, so it no longer compresses the urethra. Permanent implants hold the urethra while leaving the prostate intact.
“The Community Health Center of Branch County is committed to providing patients with the highest quality, most effective options to address their urology needs,” said Dr. Brewton. “The UroLift System has an excellent safety profile and provides men suffering from an enlarged prostate a beneficial first-line treatment alternative to drug therapy or more invasive surgery. Importantly, the UroLift System provides fast and meaningful relief from BPH symptoms, improving overall quality of life for our patients.”
