COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports yesterday, in softball, Coldwater swept a doubleheader at home over Hanover-Horton 3-2 and 4-1. In the nine-inning opener, Stacy Guzy went the distance with a 3-hitter. Payton Watson had a double and a single. In game two, Darlene Horn was the winning pitcher, tossing a 6-hitter with 5 strikeouts. Morgan Howard had a home run, a single, and two RBI’s while Jamie Wellet had two singles. Coldwater improved to 6-0 and with their Interstate Eight Conference opener on the schedule for Thursday at home against Marshall.
In yesterday’s junior varsity action at Hanover-Horton, it was a Coldwater sweep over the host Comets 19-1 and 28-7. The winning pitchers were Drue Mullin and Sierra Wolfcale. In game one, Wolfcale had a two run double while in the nightcap, Jalynn Snyder had a triple and 4 RBI’s while Mullin had 2 singles and 3 RBI’s.
In baseball, Quincy split a doubleheader at home with Sand Creek. The Orioles beat Sand Creek in the opener 8-4 with Josh Clark picking up the victory on the mound with a 5-hitter over 6 innings along with 6 strikeouts. Tyler Powell had 2 hits and 3 RBI’s. Sand Creek won the 6-inning nightcap 3-2. Hunter Haylett started and took the loss, allowing all 3 runs, two of them earned, on 4 hits with 4 strikeouts. Powell and Jake Jodway had 2 hits apiece.
In girls soccer last night, Coldwater played to a one-one tie at home with Jonesville. It was a scoreless first half and then Jonesville went ahead 1-0 on a goal with 22:37 left in the game. Coldwater got the equalizer with 3:08 left from Madison Marsh, assisted by Megan Hoath. Coldwater outshot Jonesville 17-11, including 12-5 in second half. Shelby Bowers had 6 saves in goal. Coldwater is now 3-1-1 overall and will play next at Eaton Rapids Saturday at 11 am.
Also in girls soccer last night, Quincy lost at home 4-2 to Calhoun Christian. All of the scoring happened in the first half. Quincy fell behind 1-0 on an early goal by the visiting Cougars just 95 seconds into the match but the Orioles countered at the 33:55 mark as Cailyn Hines scored off an assist from Julia Hildebrand. Quincy then took the lead at the 26:52 mark as Ally Parrish scored off an assist from Haley Bean inside the box to make it 2-1. Calhoun Christian came right back at 23:03, finding the net on a corner kick and then again off a misplayed ball with 3:12 left in the half to take a 3-2 lead. The final goal of the night came with 2:07 left before the break off a direct kick outside the box to make it 4-2. Quincy dropped to 1-2-and-1 on the season and starts league play Thursday night at home versus Jackson Christian.
Monday in boys golf, Coldwater opened its season by winning the Maple Invitational hosted by Adrian High School at the Lenawee Country Club. The Cardinals defeated 7 other teams with a score of 346. The low score for Coldwater was posted by Nolan Duda who finished runner-up in the tournament with an 81. Nathan Waterbury finished in 4th place with an 84, Stephan Boston carded an 88, good enough for a tie for 8th place overall. Rounding out the scoring for the Cardinals was Keagan Dwyer with a 93 and Nick Galliers with a 95. Coldwater will begin Interstate 8 play tomorrow when they host the first Jamboree of the season at the Coldwater Golf Course and then on Friday, Coldwater will be hosting the Coldwater Cardinal Invitational with 18 teams participating.
On today’s very busy high school sports schedule, in baseball, Coldwater plays at home against Comstock and we’ll have our opening baseball broadcast of the season with our live coverage on the radio beginning around 5:30 p.m. following the Evening Journal. Also, in baseball and softball, in a pair of Big Eight Conference openers, it’s Quincy at home against Springport while Union City is at Concord and in the BCS East, Bronson plays at home against Centreville. In track, it’s Coldwater at Jackson Northwest. In boys golf, Union City hosts a jamboree at the Turtle Creek Golf Course. And in girls tennis, Coldwater plays at home against Marshall while Bronson hosts Schoolcraft.
