COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater varsity softball team bounced back from a pair of tough losses against Parchment Thursday with two lopsided, mercy rule-shortened wins against visiting Hastings at the Rotary Softball Complex, 15-0 in four innings and 16-1 in three innings. In the opener, winning pitcher Darlene Horn gave up three hits with no walks and 5 strikeouts, while Michaela Gillette had a total of 5 runs batted in with a home run and two doubles, and Morgan Howard added a two-run homer. In the nightcap, which we had on the radio, Stacy Guzy was the winning pitcher, giving up 1 run on 2 hits with no walks and 2 strikeouts, while our McDonald’s Player of the Game, Payton Waton, was 3-for-3 at the plate. The Cardinals improved to 13-5 on the season.
In track, Coldwater’s boys team finished 2nd out of 15 teams at the Onsted Wildcat Booster Invitational, with a total of 101 points, 15 fewer than meet champion Tecumseh. Logan Targgart set a school and meet record in the discus, with his throw of 176′ 1-1/2″ besting the school record he set last year by nearly 8 inches. Targgart also won the shot put, while Connor Covert was second in the discus, Blaze Watson placed second in the pole vault, Jaden Coney was third in the long jump, Shuaib Aljabaly was second in the 3200m run, and Matt Sowles finished fourth in the 1600m run.
In boys golf, Coldwater won the 40th Annual Western Open at Arbor Hills Golf Course, with their team score of 316 edging runner-up Lumen Christi by just one stroke. Individually, Cameron Ruge placed third with a round of 75, Nolan Duda placed fifth with a 77, and Nate Waterbury finished just outside the top ten with an 81. Stephen Boston and Nick Galliers each shot 83 to finish the scoring. Meanwhile, at the Sturgis Invitational at Island Hills, Coldwater’s “B” team placed 8th out of 17 teams with a score of 368, while Bronson finished 16th with a team score of 434. Coldwater was led by Tanner Bowers with an 83; Keagan Dwyer and Jacob Fair each shot 91, and Colin Outwater had a 103. For Bronson, Ryan O’Rourke shot a 97, Zach Smurr had a 105, Sawyer Maddox a 109, and Logan Kenny a 123.
On today’s schedule, in baseball, Coldwater takes on Escanaba and Bay City John Glenn in a 3-team mini tournament at Bay City John Glenn, while Bronson is at the Leslie Invitational, Quincy hosts an invitational tournament, and Union City is at the Colon Darmofal Tournament. Also, Coldwater hosts its annual Freshman Invitational at Lowe Field, and Union City hosts its JV Rotarian Tournament. In softball, Bronson competes at the Grand Rapids Northview Invitational, Quincy hosts an invitational tournament. and Union CIty is at the Colon Darmofal Invitational. In girls soccer, Coldwater competes at the Hanover-Horton Invitational, and Quincy hosts its own invitational. Quincy will also host its annual track invitational, with Bronson and Union City among the teams in action. In boys golf, Coldwater and Union City are at the St. Philip Tiger Invitational at the Binder Park Golf Course. And in girls tennis, Coldwater competes at the Paw Paw Rally For The Cure, while Bronson is at the Hillsdale Invitational.
